We’re not going to argue with the supermarket bought pint, but with so many local ice cream makers creating one of a kind flavors — heading out for a hand scooped cone isn’t a bad idea. With warm weather in mind, here’s a round up of singularly Philadelphia ice cream flavors to try this summer.

Basset’s
This beloved Reading Terminal old-timer has been scooping since 1861. Their eggless, Philadelphia-style formula makes a creamy beginning for a full roster of flavors, but the salty-sweet, vanilla-based peanut butter swirl is a hometown favorite — one best enjoyed while strolling around this expansive indoor market.

Little Babys

Best known for stunt flavors like everything bagel and Earl Grey sriracha, Little Baby’s homage to its hometown comes in the form of chocolate molasses cream studded with made-in-Philly Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews (pictured above). Most Philly vegans are already aware that these sticky chocolate candies are dairy-free, but it might come as news that Little Baby’s makes a vegan version of the ice cream as well.

Capogiro

No one does seasonal flavors like this Philly-born gelateria (pictured at top). Sourcing produce from celeb farmer Ian Brendle of Green Meadow farm ensures that their scoop line up corresponds with what’s at the farmers’ market. This time of year, Lancaster County foraged blackberries are transformed into a deep purple gelato that’s only on offer for a few short weeks.

Franklin Fountain

The vintage vibes are reason enough to stop into this stuck in time soda fountain, but the ice cream really is top tier. Franklin’s ode to cookies and cream is a standout made with crushed Hydrox cookies, a Nabisco brand that was produced in Philadelphia until the factory was sold earlier this year.

La Michoacana
Drive out to scenic Kennett Square for a Mexican ice cream experience like no other. Sure, the menu might line up tropical favors like mamey and passionfruit. But the real draw here are authentic south of the border offerings like sweet corn and avocado ice cream.
